The Journey of Nursing School

I had the honor and privilege of speaking at this semester’s pinning ceremony for the graduating class. Being asked was deeply meaningful—though, truthfully, standing in front of nearly six hundred guests made me feel as if I might vomit.
Once I stepped to the podium, the audience faded into a blur. I don’t think I saw a single face. My focus narrowed to one thing: trying to capture the meaning of nursing school—the weight of it, the growth, the becoming.
In that moment, I was able to leave them with a reminder—a reflection on the journey that carried them to this very night.
You walked in wide-eyed, a little unsure,
Hearts full of hope, with courage so pure.
You stumbled at times—yes, that part’s true—
But every challenge helped shape the nurse in you.
You started with basics, built from the ground,
And piece by piece, your strength was found.
Not just as students with books held tight—
But as nurses who rise, who serve, who fight.
From Fundamentals to bedside grace,
You learned the art of holding sacred space.
In Pediatrics, your gentleness shined
In OB, your calm helped new life unwind.
In Mental Health, you mastered the skill
Of listening deeply—quiet, strong, and still.
And in Med-Surg, you hit your stride,
Balancing purpose, pressure, and pride.
Advanced Med-Surg tested your fire,
But you pushed through—climbing higher.
And in Preceptorship, you stood so tall,
Proving you’re ready to answer the call.
Kaplan brought endless logins, endless drills—
But each question helped shape your growing skills.
You showed up tired—yet gave your all,
Weary eyes but, still standing tall.
You lifted each other in moments of doubt,
Through deadlines, stress, and days worn out.
The bond you’ve formed is deep and true—
And I could not be prouder of each one of you.
Now, as you step beyond this place,
Go share your strength, your heart, your grace.
Remember your worth, and all you’ve become—
This is just the beginning; your journey’s just begun.
So good luck, dear nurses—stand in the light.
Be kind, be fierce. Be someone’s might.
I taught you with purpose; and now with pride—
And as colleagues, I’ll stand by your side.
Wear that badge with honor; carry your part—
You hold the future within your heart.
You are ready. You are called. You are the next brave wave—
The ones who will rise. The ones who will save.
You will speak for the voiceless, fight for what’s right,
Steady the chaos, and bring healing light.
The world needs your mind, your hands, your grace—
Fall 2025—go take your place.
